Jianzhan is a type of black porcelain tea ware that originated in Jianyang town, Fujian Province, China, during the Tang Dynasty. It uses mineral rich clay and glazes that are not only beautiful but improve the flavor of tea. The clay retains heat well, allowing for more enjoyable tea sessions. As the cup is used the glaze develops a unique patina becoming more beautiful over time. The glaze patterns vary based upon firing temperatures and kiln position. It can resemble oil spots, partridge feathers, rainbows, tortoise shell, and rabbit fur.
Owning a piece of Jianzhan is a must for all serious Chinese tea drinkers.
